It's more convenient to throw on than a jacket and pants, and it's more versatile since it basically doubles as a blanket. It's perfect just for those chilly spring/summer/fall mornings or evenings. I find myself using it way more than I thought I would. For car camping, though, I have really liked the poncho. So if weight and packability are concerns, like on a backpacking trip, a poncho doesn't make the cut for me. My 30* down sleeping bag is significantly warmer, weighs half as much, and packs down to half the size of the poncho but it obviously doesn't allow any mobility and has a very thin shell that isn't durable. Honestly an ultralight puffy down jacket and similar pants could probably provide more warmth for about the same amount of weight, especially if you're gonna be moving around at all while wearing said items. Weve taken it to the mountain for apres-ski tailgate. Hard to explain well in writing but basically because of how a poncho fits over your body it doesn't block wind well unless you wrap up pretty tightly. Putting the fun in functional, the puffy poncho (made by Thermarest) is literally down for anything. If you can keep your arms and legs under the poncho it works pretty well but if your extremities are exposed then not only will they get cold but it also causes any cold air draft to blow through the poncho easily which makes it much less effective at keeping your body warm. It ended up being so-so for my intended purpose. It definitely isn't a substitute for a sleeping bag. The Honcho Poncho offers extra warmth and water resistance for any outdoor activity as a blanket or poncho. Without any extra layering it might keep you warm down to around 50F at most but that's it.

HONCHO PONCHO HOW TO

One part poncho, one part blanket, all you have to do is choose how to use. Now, as for the utility of a poncho in general.not sure if you've actually gotten the Honcho Poncho yet so if not what I've found is that it does provide a little extra warmth and comfort but not a whole lot. The Therm-a-Rest Honcho Poncho is versatile attire thats ready to warm you up. So I think that's what it comes down to between the two-do you need something that is somewhat wind and water-proof or do you just need insulation? Because the honcho poncho is about as wind and water-proof as a puffy jacket-enough for a light breeze or drizzle but not much more. Because they both weigh about the same I assumed that means the Swagman has less insulation. But I do know that the Swagman has a more durable, weather-resistant outer layer. I had a really hard time comparing the two without actually getting to see either because they don't specify precisely how much insulation each one has very clearly. I ended up going with the Honcho Poncho because it has more insulation. Basically I wanted something that I could quickly throw on when I was gonna sit still for more than a few minutes, and I thought a poncho might be ideal because it would cover more of my body than just an extra jacket. I was looking for a little extra insulation when out deer hunting since I spend a lot of time both walking ( ie producing some warmth) and sitting still (ie getting cold). I actually made this exact decision a year or so ago.
